Frequency Specific Microcurrent or Frequency Specific Microcurrent Therapy (FSMT) is the practice of introducing a mild electrical current into an area of damaged tissue. Practitioners claim that the introduced current optimizes the healing process that is occurring within the body. There have been numerous scientific studies that have proven the benefits of microcurrent therapy, along with specific frequencies to normalize cellular function within the body. This leads to accelerated recovery times, decreased pain, and optimized mobility.
Frequencies used in microcurrent therapy are delivered in Hertz (Hz). This is the speed of the current as it is being delivered into the body, and it is associated with the depths of penetration for each setting. The lower the frequency, the slower it is with more depth of penetration. The higher the frequency, the faster the speed is with less depth of penetration into the body. Frequencies align with the type of tissue being addressed within the body.
FSMT is said to be a newer phenomenon within physiotherapy and physical therapy, however microcurrent therapy and specific frequencies as a whole has been available to patients for many years.
The original and most advanced Frequency Specific Microcurrent Therapy is the Acuscope and Myopulse Therapy System, along with the Neuroscope. These instruments not only combine FSMT but also incorporate a pre-programmed biofeedback system with audio and digital readouts. The biofeedback design principles of these instruments allow the practitioner to interpret the digital and auditory outputs, and adjust the treatments appropriately to interface with the state of the tissue. Normal FSMT modalities do not offer biofeedback capabilities, categorizing them as "fixed output" options. They deliver microcurrent to the affected tissue whether it needs it or not. This can lead to overstimulation of damaged tissue which can cause further detriment and dysfunction, versus achieving true resolution within the body with the Acuscope and Myopulse instruments. Overstimulation is not possible with the Acuscope and Myopulse due to their ability to monitor the tissue requirements, and internally adjust the output as a result of the biofeedback system.
The professional models of the Acuscope and Myoopulse instruments (Acuscope 80T, Acuscope 85P, Myopulse 75T, Myopulse 75TN) each offer 12-24 different frequencies (depending on the model) for the practitioner to choose from to meet the individual needs of each patient. These frequencies attempt to match the body's requirements for normalizing nerve function, soft and connective tissue, inflammation, bony areas, wound care, circulation and blood flow, and neurologic conditions.
The Neuroscope is designed with four specific and primary frequencies that align with brain wave function wile also incorporating an internal biofeedback system. The practitioner can choose specific brain waves that have been altered by a traumatic injury or degenerative condition, and align those needs with the available frequencies on the Neuroscope. The goal of Neuroscope applications is to normalize brain function with a level of current that is produced naturally by the body, with specific frequencies to normalize each brain wave state.
Please Note: Available devices marketed as FSMT are stating "Frequencies are simultaneously applied used on two channels so they intersect or cross in the area to be treated." When frequencies "intersect or cross" in the area of treatment, this is not an effective use of microcurrent. This type of application only confuses or blocks pain signals from the treatment area to the brain, similar to how traditional TENS units (high voltage modalities) are used. Although microcurrent in general is more effective for long term results offering a broad range of benefits to patients versus high voltage modalities, it is important to apply microcurrent appropriately for safe and effective treatments. The Acuscope, Myopulse, and Neuroscope instruments are not meant to be used in a intersecting or crossing fashion. They are designed to be used to normalize cellular function by delivering the appropriate amount of microcurrent to the tissue being addressed. This allows the body to obtain the appropriate energy to do its own work of self repair, allowing the patient to reach a true state of resolution.
The Electro-Acuscope/Myopulse Therapy System, and the Neuroscope instruments are the original Frequency Specific Microcurrent Therapy devices. In conjunction with FSMT, they are programmed with the most advanced technology and biofeedback system available in the health care industry to date. Other FSMT devices are not designed with this level of technology.
